illuminating vintage glass through new technology
When uranium salts were added to glass making in the late 1800's they had no way of knowing what they would help unlock 100 years later. The evelopment of powerful, high-efficiency ultraviolet LED technology is perfect for illuminating the unique chemical attributes of these glasses.
With many trends today focused on producing inexpensive and semi-disposable goods, the opportunity to mix the old with new technology to re-popularize and breathe new life into UV reactive vintage glass can produce some spectactular results.
In years past uranium glass was marketed as having a glow in the sun's light, and in the right set of conditions as the sun was setting, UV light would make the glass glow brighter as the ambient light was fading, but the UV light was still providing the glow effect. Fast forward 100 or so years with advances in LED lighting, we are now able to artifically create the exact light spectrum to entice this glass to glow at its maximum briliance.
Old Becomes New Again
Vintage glass styles and colors are inceasingly popular, with recreations showing up in most large retailers. Unforunately they also tend to be cheaply made, and are oftentime more expesnive than buying an original.
